In the 42nd minute, Álex Baena’s relatively weak shot slipped through Muslera’s hands and into the net. That solitary goal decided the fate of the match, allowing Spain to avoid a potential knockout stage encounter with Argentina. They are scheduled to play against Austria or Algeria next Thursday in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, debutants Cape Verde made history by securing a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia in the World Cup. Thanks to Uruguay’s defeat, they confirmed their second-place finish in the group. Cape Verde will face reigning champions Argentina in the knockout stage.
Two-time world champions Uruguay caused major disappointment by exiting the tournament from the group stage. Despite being the highest-ranked team in the group according to FIFA rankings, the squad failed to find their best form throughout the tournament. It was an extremely frustrating campaign for coach Marcelo Bielsa and his players.
Reports of unrest within the Uruguay camp emerged following their draws against Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia. Several senior players, including Federico Valverde, expressed dissatisfaction with Coach Bielsa’s tactics.
